| Health and Administration of Drugs |
| |
|
| The Day Nurseries Act stipulates that prior to admission, each child must be immunized as recommended by the local Medical Officer of Health. Regulations require daily outdoor play for each child. Therefore, if parents feel that their child/ren is/are to ill to play outdoors, the child/ren should remain at home. If a child becomes ill during the day, temporary care will be provided until the parent/guardian can be contacted, and the child can be taken home. Only prescription drugs will be administered to children. This requires that parents provide the following:
- Daily written authorization, including the dosage and times any drug is to be given.
- Medication must be in the original container, clearly labelled with the child's name, name of drug, the dosage, the date of purchase and instructions for storage and administration of the drug.
Medication must not be left in the cloak room area, it will be placed in a locked cabinet.
The program follows fire, health and safety regulations and must require all members and visitors to do likewise. |

| Health of Children |
| |
|
Each child is to be given a health check upon arrival each day. Note should be taken of the color and condition of the children's skin, eyes, and overall appearance.
You should inquire as to what kind of an evening they had? Did they rest well and waken up refreshed? etc. Watch for the following symptoms:
- watery, inflamed eyes or crusty eyes or eyelids
- glazed appearance of eyes, deep cough
- inflamed nostrils, heavy green nasal discharge
- unusual irritability
- rash, sores, flushed appearance, clamminess, pallor, or other unusual conditions of skin
- contagious diseases
- running a temperature
- vomitting or diarrhea
If a child becomes ill during the day:
- notify parents and arrange for child to be picked up
- keep child comfortable until parent arrives
- record in daily log book
A general rule for determining whether or not a child is well enough to attend school is their ability to cope with a full day of programming which includes outdoor play (approximately one hour in morning and one hour in afternoon). |
