The Membership Office

Aaniin Boozhoo,

The Membership Office is able to provide you with assistance towards life events (births, deaths, marriage and/or divorce), native registration, status card issuance or renewal and blood quantum letters.  Currently, the Membership Office issues laminate status cards.  Please make an appointment to ensure the paperwork is completed prior to your visit.

As of March, 2023 there are 3241 total number of registered citizens with Garden River First Nation.  This number includes all births and new registrants.

An application is required to apply for native registration. The applications are found below.  Please complete all areas, sign and return with the long form original birth certificate. The Membership Office can review your application prior to mailing.

You will receive written notification, including the original birth certificate, in the mail within 1-2 months from Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) informing you that a file has been set up. It takes ISC approximately 6 months – 2 years to process your application.  Once processed, you will receive a registration letter in the mail outlining the details of your registration from ISC.

Receiving your registry # (199..) means that you are a Garden River First Nation registered citizen.  Garden River First Nation has its own Membership Code and to become a band member, an application is required. Band membership is different from being registered with a registry number. All children who have one parent who is non Indian must apply for band membership. Applications for membership can be picked up at the Membership Office or by clicking on the link below. The Garden River First Nation Membership Committee meets to determine who becomes a band member following the guidelines set out in the Band Membership Code and the Membership Committee Work Plan. Once the Membership Committee has met and your application has been approved, it is then taken to the Chief and Council for final ratification.  You will then be notified of the decision.
